Engagement at Bohanan's and Downtown San Antonio, TX

Vanessa & Matthew

We spent a couple of hours one lovely afternoon with Vanessa & Matthew wandering around downtown San Antonio. We strolled along the riverwalk, stopped for tea, and ended up at the restaurant where he proposed and she said yes. A huge thank you to the management and staff of Bohanan's for allowing us to take some special photos with this handsome couple before they opened to the public - it meant a lot to all of us!

Vanessa and Matthew chose downtown San Antonio for their engagement session—a setting that fit their story and gave us a tight walking loop of classic backdrops. We met in the heart of downtown and kept the plan simple: move light, shoot fast, and lean into natural interaction rather than heavy posing.

We started along the River Walk where soft reflected light and textured stone make easy work of clean portraits. Short pauses on the bridges and under canopy shade gave us a mix of intimate close-ups and wider frames that still feel unmistakably San Antonio.

Midway through, we made a quick stop for tea. It’s a small moment, but it resets energy and gives the gallery an authentic beat between locations—hands around a cup, a laugh across the table, and a few candid frames that live well next to the more composed portraits.

We wrapped at Bohanan’s—the restaurant where he proposed. The team there let us shoot before opening, which meant clean backgrounds, controlled traffic, and a few quiet minutes to build images that directly reference their story. It’s the kind of access that elevates a set from “downtown session” to “their downtown session.”

Throughout, direction stayed minimal: micro-turns, weight shifts, and simple hand placement to keep posture relaxed. Expressions aimed for natural and connected, alternating between eye-contact frames and conversational moments. The result is a gallery that feels polished without losing the ease of a walk through the city.

Wardrobe stayed classic—pieces that photograph well against stone, glass, and greenery and won’t timestamp the images. We worked a quick sequence at each stop to capture variety (full-length, three-quarter, and tight portraits) so the couple has options for save-the-dates, gifts, and prints.

Post-production remained light: true-to-life color, consistent contrast, and retouching for polish rather than overhaul. Delivered files include web crops for sharing and print-ready masters for albums or wall art.

If you’re planning an engagement session downtown, consider a route that ties back to your story—your first date, a favorite café, or the spot you said “yes.” Access and timing make a difference; early or pre-open windows often yield the cleanest frames.
